What is the difference between a Registered Dietitian and a Nutritionist?

Registered Dietitians are regulated nutrition experts that are required to complete specific university training and internships to practice. The term Registered Dietitian is protected and our profession is regulated for the safety of the public. In other words, all dietitians are nutritionists, but not all nutritionists are dietitians.

Titles like Registered Holistic Nutritionist and Certified Nutritional Practitioner are not the same as Registered Dietitian. They are often used by people who have undergone private training that vary in length and completeness.

You can read more about the difference between Registered Dietitian’s and nutritionists here.

Do you only work with plant-based eaters?

No!

Although I do specialize in plant-based and vegan diets across the lifespan, I work with all types of eaters.

So, don’t worry, working with me doesn’t mean you are going to be pushed towards a fully plant-based diet if that is not what you want or what works for you.

I will be here to guide and support you in making dietary and lifestyle changes that work for you and align with your personal health and wellness goals, whatever they may be.

How do I know working with you is right for me?

I would love to work with you, but just like with other health care providers, sometimes I might not be the best fit for you and vice versa.

This is why I offer a free 15-20 minute discovery call where you can ask questions about what working together might look like and if I feel like I can help you get to where you want to be. You can also e-mail me with these questions at info@okanagannutrition.ca

My job is to make sure that you are getting the care that you deserve, so if you are struggling with a health condition that I feel is outside of my scope, I have other specialty Registered Dietitians at the ready to recommend you on to.

Are dietitian services covered through my extended health plan?

Many extended health care plans provide full or partial coverage for services rendered by a Registered Dietitian. Double check with your specific health insurance provider!

How do you see clients?

I see most of my clients over Skype, Zoom, FaceTime or phone! For those clients who are local to Kelowna, there is the potential to meet in person at an agreed upon location.

I currently do not have an office space to practice out of.

I online chart within Practice Better. It is through this portal that I can share my recommendations, protocols and documents with you safely and securely.

Is my information kept confidential and secure?

Yes! Your privacy is a top priority. The information that you share with me is kept confidential and private unless there is reason for me to believe that there is risk of harm to the client or others.

All of my client intake forms, documents, labwork and other medical information that is shared with me is kept within my practice portal of Practice Better.

The Practice Better platform is how my clients and I communicate with one another in addition to e-mail and where session notes and recommendations are made.

Do I need a doctors referral to work with you?

You do not need a doctors referral to work with me or another private Registered Dietitian, although, we do and can receieve new referrals this way.

You can book your own appointment!

With your permission I can connect with your physician and/or other health care professionals to make sure that you are receiving the best care possible.

Can you work with clients outside of British Columbia?

I am able to work virtually with clients in all provinces but …

  • Alberta
  • Prince Edward Island (P.E.I.)

It is important for my clients outside of British Columbia to know that I am only registered in British Columbia with the College of Dietitians of British Columbia.

Not able to work with me virtually? You can take any of my e-courses!

Haeli is incredible! In one session we covered a huge spread of topics, and I received an extremely detailed summary with over a dozen recipes tailored to my diet. Haeli is incredibly knowledgable in her field, and one of the kindest people you will meet. Thank you Haeli!

- Kiah

Seriously the best food plan I’ve ever followed, also the most successful! I really wanted to focus on changing some of my eating habits and overall make better choices. Haeli made a plan that was flexible and full of AMAZING recipes! I’ve lost some weight but most importantly feel much healthier and can have a little more fun in the kitchen.

I’ve recommended Okanagan Nutrition to several friends and family who have been equally as happy!!

Oh and on top of that… because Haeli is a registered dietitian I was able to claim part of the plan through my health benefits for a partial reimbursement!

All around a 10/10 experience!!
